In a week where all of Australia now knows what "turkey slapping" means, where politicians and conservative groups tried to go all Orwellian regarding Big Brother and where the Italians actually won a World Cup game fairly, I have decided to go all old school and have taken up the humble activity of knitting.

So far I've done two rows. I must, I must, I must keep going and not give up half-way and end up with a pathetic 30cm long "scarf". (Gawd, the amount of half-completed cross-stitch projects I own…)

Anyway, on a side note, I see that Billy Connelly, Tilda Swinton and Annie Lennox have been given honorary doctorates. I do realise that this is a good way for Universities to get publicity and I do realise that people who are awarded honorary doctorates have done a lot of
work in their fields.

But seriously, it really, really, really pisses off people who are getting doctorates the hard way – by actually doing one and by not earning shitloads of money while doing it. Grrrrr!

Oh, man, I didn't know what a turkey slap was until today. Thanks for educating me! And that video is HILARIOUS. I just sent the link to Alex. He'll love it.

I understand why it's frustrating to see folks get awarded what you're working so hard to get. Still, I could use an honorary PhD right now...

I'm convinced that the reason my wife married me is that I knitted her a scarf when we were dating.

I love Billy Connelly...when I can understand him. Freakin' hilarious. HE deserves a PhD, but I get what you're saying...you had to sweat blood out of your eyeballs for yours. He just had to make jokes about getting white pubes. GOOD jokes...but no bloody sweat. It's NOT fair.

Kira - you can have an honarary PhD because you've worked hard without being paid shitloads of money!

S.C. - awwww - that's so you! Very sweet.

Amanda - I'm still at the point where I need to watch every stitch so I don't drop a thread!

nomadjf - the things you find on You Tube. I'm finding it addictive for those gems from the past.

Laura - yes, very, very funny - but not fair!

I wonder if Dr. Lennox would like to come analyze all these transcriptions I've just finished...
