and dance like no one is watching."
Everyone knows that saying.
Thing is, I won't do the first, can't do the second, and will only do
the third if I've drunk enough vodka tonics.
Our hang-ups make us what we are, our past creates us, and our present
situations mould us.
I don't think I'd want to be so free that I'd purposely act a certain
way despite my present situation and my past experiences. I think it
would be silly of me to do that. I'm naturally cautious – but that's
because of my experiences.
If I let go of that – I'd open myself up to the same mistakes – and I
really don't want to do that.
So I'll work the way I choose to work – steadily, dispassionately and
minimally but effectively.
I'll love the only way I know how – gently, deeply and with quiet-intensity.
And I'll dance the way I see appropriate for any given situation.

Well said. :)
These platitudes always bother me, because they assume there's only one way to live/be happy/find contentment/whatever.
I guess I approach that saying differently so it's never bothered me. I interpret the first thing to mean, find a job you like doing instead of suffering your whole life just to make a buck. That sounds good to me. Then the second one to me means, don't let your sig other pay for somebody else's mistakes. Okay, that sounds fair. And the last one just means, enjoy what you enjoy without worrying about whether or not others snicker at you for liking it. That last one is particularly important to a geek like me who has been teased in her life for loving the fantasty/sci fi stuff in all forms. Screw 'em! I like it, and if they don't, they don't have to! So, since I looked at it figuratively instead of literally, it has never really offended me as a saying.
You can't fight your temperament.
I like that you love with quiet intensity! I'm going to steal that phrase. Just warning you.
Quiet intensity... aha! I knew it! ;)
I think you should always do what feels right and comfortable to you; and I do agree - you should keep the life lessons you've learned in your mind when you live/love/dance/etc. however you choose to. It wouldn't make a lot of sense to do something over and over than doesn't work... not that I haven't been guilty of it in the past, lol!
Hmm, I confess I took Kira's interpretation of that saying.
But if we're going literal here, then I'll say 'marry a rich man' on all three counts.
Hehehe.
i don't need to try to dance like no-one's watching. I get hilarious giggles if I hokey-pokey for them. I'm sure the students in the house across the road get a giggle from it too. It's amazing what a little tacker will do for your ability to do things you'd otherwise be totally embarrassed by.
The other two, bah humbug.
i should clarify, the hokey-pokeying amanda in the previous comment was ginchy!
It's just a basic saying.... meaning take a chance on being yourself and doing what will make you happy.
We live in a society that allows that freedom without dire pitfalls......and by dire pitfalls, I mean death, starvation or no roof over your head.
Sure, you might not have an investment home, or even afford a comfortable, safe existence....but it can be really worth going for "it".
It can work out and it does more often than you might think.
If you are not the type of person who would leap into the void, then why stress over it? I never think about getting a "real job". Wouldn't dream of it....shudders.
Well said!!!
Boil it all down and we really do care how we are seen by others, precieved by froends, and living within our own world.
Go Dr. Jezzy!!!!
