I've had so many people say...

...how come you haven't joined Facebook yet!!

Some people are obsessed!

I checked out my brother's, my cousin's and a colleagues Facebook page and I dunno - it just freaked me out that they were real pictures of them under their real name with real details of what they were doing.

It's just that if I get paranoid enough of getting stalkers here - I'd be totally paranoid of stalkers there. Besides, it kinda feels unprofessional - what if someone was Google-ing me to find out about my research and finds my Facebook site with me in my swimwear, lying on the beach? (As seemed to be the case with my cousin's site - and she's supposed to be an accountant!)

I dunno - has anyone else joined?

I'm on, but I'm really careful about it. I have mine set up so that only people on my friend list can actually see my full profile. Then, I'm only using a professional picture too. I think people can google you and see your photo and maybe your friend list... then request to be your friend or something. I actually talk with my students about it in my business writing classes because employers CAN go look at that stuff when they get ready to hire you. We had the incident last year where a fraternity or sorority sponsored a "Living the Dream" party on Martin Luther King Jr. day; people showed up in black face. There were girls with padding in their jeans to make their butts big. I was so angry about that, although my students swore it was never meant to be disrespectful. I told whether it was intended to be that way or not - IT WAS.

Anyway, on the plus side for Facebook, I have a good many professional contacts on there, and it's a handy way to ask them questions and correspond about various things.

You can hide most of your information. Much like myspace. It is scary to have your picture out there.

Nup, I'm with you on this one, Jez: no Facebook for me. Of course now it's possible for most people to join, but up until last year it was only open to students, which kept me out of the running, anyway.

BTW, look at these stats on the 'Book, from the Wikipedia:

* Active users: 39 million[3]
* RAM in memcache servers: 2 TB
* Search index size: 200GB
* Largest networks:
London, UK 1,031,687 and
Toronto, Canada 836,605 [107]
* Traffic rank: 7th[4]
* Photos: 1.7 billion (which averages to about 44 photos per user) [108]

I'm on Facebook. It's one way I actually keep in touch with three of my nieces--if I message them there, then they get the message instantly and message back! I have a few goofy things on there, but no scandalous pictures or anything that I wouldn't want a future/current employer to see. I'm ok with the occasional goofiness because, well, I AM goofy :) I don't worry too much about the stalking issue or anything else. I dunno. Maybe I should!

I'm on facebook, but I think only people I have as friends can see my whole profile. I've found a few people I've lost contact with over the years which is kind of cool.

Besides which, you don't have to use your real name. You could sign up as jezzygirl and use the pic you have here as your profile picture anyway. There are ways to stay 'relatively' anonymous there if you want to.

at the risk of sounding boring, I'd only do it for profesionnal reasons - same as MySpace and YouTube. I'd keep personal stuff well away from there.
